Beef stroganoff

A warming lunch which provides a children’s serve of meat, vegetables and grains with each portion

Small potatoes




Lean beef strips 




Plain flour

Reduced salt beef stock

Worcestershire sauce

Tomato paste

Natural yoghurt

  1. Cook pasta according to packet instructions.
  2. Peel and chop onion.
  3. Wash and slice carrot and celery.
  4. Slice mushrooms.
  5. Heat oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat. Add onion, carrot and celery. Cook gently for 5 minutes.
  6. Wash, peel and finely slice potatoes. Add potatoes to pan. Cook for 3 minutes.
  7. Increase heat to high. Add mushrooms. Cook for 4 minutes, or until tender. Set pan aside.
  8. Lightly coat beef strips in flour. In a non-stick pan, cook beef in small batches until browned.
  9. Add beef to vegetables and return pan to flame.
  10. Add stock, Worcestershire sauce and tomato paste.
  11. Bring to the boil. Reduce heat to medium-low. Simmer for 10 minutes, or until sauce has thickened slightly.
  12. Remove from heat.
  13. Stir through natural yoghurt.
  14. Serve with pasta.

  • 1 children’s serve of meat/alternatives* (beef)
  • 1 children’s serve of vegetables**
  • 1 children’s serve of grains*** (pasta)

Allergy modifications

  • For a wheat/gluten free option, serve with gluten free pasta or rice, replace plain flour with gluten free plain flour, use gluten free stock powder and replace Worcestershire sauce with gluten free soy sauce.
  • For a soy free option, choose a soy free stock.
  • For an egg free option, ensure the pasta used does not contain any egg products.
  • For a milk protein free and lactose free option, replace natural yoghurt with soy yoghurt.


  • Beef strips can be replaced with chicken breast strips or pork strips.

* One children’s serve of lean meat, poultry, fish or alternatives is equal to half a serve in the Australian Dietary Guidelines.
** One children’s serve of vegetables is equal to one serve in the Australian Dietary Guidelines.
*** One children’s serve of (grain) cereal foods is equal to one serve in the Australian Dietary Guidelines.
