NEW: Launch of updated Planning healthy menus for long day care course

We are excited to announce the launch of our updated online training course Planning healthy menus for long day care.

This free, self-paced course is for cooks, educators, management, and directors working in Early childhood services.

The course will provide the essential knowledge and skills to meet the healthy eating requirements of policies relevant to your centre, including:

  • National Quality Standard
  • Education and Care Services National Law and the Education and Care Services National Regulations
  • Victorian Early Years Learning and Development Framework outcomes

The course can be completed in less than an hour and a certificate of completion can be downloaded after finishing.

Planning healthy menus for long day care consists of five interactive modules:

MODULE 1: Nutrition in long day care

Discover why nutrition during a child’s first 2,000 days is so important and how your service can help lay the foundation for lifelong health and wellbeing. This module explores the key elements of a whole service approach and the benefits of offering nutritious menus, giving you practical knowledge to strengthen nutrition practices across your service.

MODULE 2: Menu planning guidelines in long day care

Gain the knowledge you need to confidently plan menus that align with the Victorian Government’s Menu planning guidelines for long day care. In this module you’ll learn about the recommended serves for each food group and how they can support children’s nutrition and wellbeing.

MODULE 3: How to plan menus

Build your confidence in menu planning with practical guidance you can apply straight away. In this module you’ll learn how to use the Menu planning guidelines for long day care to calculate food quantities, create balanced menus that include all five food groups, and make more nutritious menu choices.

MODULE 4: Using FoodChecker in long day care

Learn about the key features of FoodChecker and gain the practical skills to confidently use FoodChecker in your service. This module will guide you through the key features of the tool, show you how to complete the Pre-FoodChecker checklist for accurate menu assessments, and help you use FoodChecker to plan menus that align with the Menu planning guidelines for long day care.

MODULE 5: Making changes in your long day care

Learn practical strategies to plan seasonal menus, make the most of your food budget and create positive, successful mealtimes. In this module you’ll also discover how the Healthy Eating Advisory Service can support your service with free tools, resources and expert advice.
