Healthy Choices – Financial impacts – City of Melbourne
Overview
In 2010, the City of Melbourne implemented its ‘Green Light Eat Right’ program at the North Melbourne Recreation Centre café.
Green Light Eat Right aligns with the Victorian Government’s Healthy Choices guidelines, which uses a traffic light system to classify food and drinks as GREEN (best choice), AMBER (choose carefully) and RED (limit).
Over four years, the availability of RED items at the North Melbourne Recreation Centre café was gradually reduced, with most RED items removed from sale by the start of the 2014/15 season.
This trial of removing RED items from sale was later evaluated by Deakin University, with funding from VicHealth.
While there was an initial decrease in total sales, the initial ‘No Red’ trial showed minimal impact on overall sales.
